The 17,292-TEU “APL Fullerton”.

DP World’s Deepwater Public Port in Posorja, Ecuador, received the largest and largest capacity vessel ever to arrive in the country, the container ship “APL Fullerton”, which has a length of 397.88 meters and a beam of 51 meters. The vessel, with a maximum capacity of 17,292 TEUs, made its call on September 14.

“We continue to consolidate Posorja as a strategic shipping point in the region. The arrival of these mega-ships of large size and capacity contribute to Ecuadorian foreign trade and strengthen the country’s competitiveness in important markets such as Asia,” said Carlos Merino, CEO of DP World in Ecuador and Peru.

It should be noted that this is not the first time that DP World Posorja has made possible the direct and exclusive call of avant-garde vessels that have arrived in the region. Important vessels of great value for the industry and for the Ecuadorian foreign trade have already arrived at the public terminal. Among the landfalls that have marked a milestone are the following:

  • December, 2022: “CMA CGM Argentina” becomes the largest and largest vessel to call in Ecuador at that time, with a length of 366 meters and capacity to move 15,000 TEUs.
  • June-July, 2023: In this period the terminal in Posorja served three vessels of the shipping line CMA CGM, propelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG), a fuel that mitigates greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and other pollutants that cause global warming. These three ships were also the first alternative fuel-powered vessels to arrive in Ecuador.
  • September, 2023: “CMA CGM Alexander Von Humboldt”. At 396 meters long, the equivalent of almost three times the size of the tallest building in Ecuador (The Point), it became the first Ultra Large Container Vessel (UCLV) to arrive at an Ecuadorian port.

Great advantages

The arrival of vessels such as the “APL Fullerton” is possible thanks to the attributes of the DP World Posorja terminal, such as: its deep and expeditious maritime access channel, its strategic location, a modern infrastructure equipped with large electric gantry cranes and advanced technology that meets high safety standards, as well as its operational efficiency. It is worth noting that these characteristics have led the port to be recognized -for the third consecutive time- in the World Bank’s “Container Port Performance Index (CPPI)” ranking, where it is currently ranked number 3 among the most efficient terminals in the region and number 37 worldwide.

As part of the ‘Asia Central South America 1’ (ACSA1) service, an exclusive service from the port of Posorja to the Asian market, the “APL Fullerton” exported products such as shrimp, bananas, timber, cocoa, among others.

Through the Asia Central South America 1 (ACSA1) shipping service, an exclusive service from the port of Posorja to the Asian market, products such as shrimp, bananas, timber, cocoa, minerals, among others, which contribute to the country’s economic balance, were exported on the container ship APL Fullerton. After calling at Posorja, the vessel will continue to the ports of Mexico and then return to Asia.
